The Greek Key. is a universal symbol of friendship, love, and devotion. And one of the oldest designs in history. Originally from the area of Meander in ancient Greece, it symbolizes the eternal flow of things. The designs are one of the most common motifs in ancient Greek art and are often seen on the ruins of Greek temples.

A meander originally was any decorative border constructed from a continuous line, shaped into a repeated motif. However, over the centuries it has come to mean the straight line design we see today.

One of the loveliest Greek Key designs we have seen is on this antique French mantel. Hand carved with paint worn by time. Or the mantel at George Washingtons home Mt. Vernon.

The Greek Key made one of its many revivals if it ever went out of style, during the Art Nouveau and then the Art Deco period.

Our greek key is a little less esoteric; it is a flexible trim handmade in Maine to embellish your home or your furniture. Measuring 48″ long by 1 ” wide. We designed these trims especially for rounded surfaces like this lovely demilune table

or the antique chair.

It works equally well on this modern chest done by Stacey at Faux Studio Designs to give it an updated look.
