Fancy French Escutcheons
The escutcheon is an old French word meaning a shield. Today it means:
1. a shield or emblem bearing a coat of arms
2. a flat piece of metal for protection and often ornamentation, around a keyhole, door handle, or light switch.
An escutcheon is often part of a lockset to protect the surrounding area from damage and wear from the end of the key when it misses the keyhole.
OK, another way of writing this is that it is a fancy French word for keyhole cover. Of course, when your little covers are fancy and French, it’s fun to use the fancy French word for them.
We have five styles of Escutcheons, from small and demure to big and fancy. We even have one that is Art Deco. All of our covers have a lovely detail that is preserved from the original and is handmade for your next project.
